The day started as any other, dodging bullies on the way to school, succeeding until they met me at my locker. They managed to only get me in there twice, I must be getting stronger. Classes proceeded at the normal clip, dodging spitwads from the less perfect students. Finally track practice came up.
Shiv loved the smell of the track in the afternoon, the grass, the air, the breeze. He hefted the discus in his hand, the mathematical figures spiraling through his mind. He began to spin. The discus was surprisingly one of Shiv's best events, he was second overall in the school. The other kids wondered why, but Shiv thought it was because he understood the physics of the thing. He knew just when to let go to make the disc soar through the air, as if buoyed by the wind.
This time was different. Just as Shiv was about to let go, a rock the size of a walnut hurtled through the air and hit him on the head. Crying in pain, Shiv let go too soon, and the discus flew over the fence into the adjacent forest. Shiv reached up to his head and found a small cut on his cheek.
Quickly he stood up, refusing to show weakness to the other kids, his attacker one of them. The teacher was running to Shiv, but Shiv, blinded by his own pride and pain, climbed the fence and ran after his lost tool.
Fifteen minutes of walking through the trees, Shiv finally found the disc. But it was strange, how had the disc flown so far? Shiv couldn't have thrown it that hard. He reached down and picked up the discus and the light it was covering was revealed. Shiv squinted against the light. There in the ground cradled in the roots of a big Pine tree was this little device with three buttons to the side of a small square screen. The colors were green with blue buttons, and a white screen that was giving off the odd light.
Shiv, unable to control himself, picked it up. The screen dimmed, and then showed the picture of what appeared to be an 8 bit blob jumping up and down shouting, "I found you! I found you!"
"Huh?" said Shiv as he turned around to go back to the school.
Shiv started walking, his footsteps rustling against the backdrop of the forest. Every footstep taking him closer to the school where no one liked him, or so he thought. Half an hour later, Shiv was still in the forest, and getting further and further worried. The device was continuing to beep at his side, and the blob was now saying, "I'm coming!"
