A thousand-and-three Digital Years ago, one of the Demon Consortium made their way to the City of Legends (open, as it was, to all comers) in a disguise. He began to corrupt citizens with his masters influence. The City fell into infighting.
As three years of this went by, Digimon began to flee the city center, retreating to the edges of the city, even as it fell into disrepair. The dark Digimon synthesised a viral form of the corruption over this time - but when he unleashed it, the whole island shattered into nine pieces.
The guardian of the city sealed up the entrance in order to contain the virus and the dark one hid away. Only the center remained intact, becoming a city of its own right, whilst those who lived on the fragments made them into their ideal habitats. And thus the Age of Strife ended, and the Age of Isolation began, and continues to this day.
